PONGAL FESTIVAL
This is the sacred harvest, earth and sun festival popular in Tamil Nadu. It is celebrated to honour the divine and to mark the auspicious beginning of the Sun God's journey towards the North. The festival lasts four days.The first day of Pongal is known as Bhogi. People clean their houses and burn old clothes to mark a fresh beginning. Houses are decorated with elaborate designs called Kolam. This day is dedicated in honour of Lord Indra, the god of rain
MASI MAGAM
This festival is celebrated by the Tamils. MagamorMakam is one of the 27 stars in Hindu astrology. This star falls on a full moon day in the month of Masi. This is a highly auspicious time. The celebrations takes place by bathing temple idols in a nearby river, pond or sea. In Pondicherry the festival is celebrated on the sea shore. In the morning around 30 sacred idols from different religions are bathed in the sea. At night a procession of illuminated cars carries these images.
