ETTUMANOOR SHIVA TEMPLE

This auspicious pilgrimage for the Hindus is located about 12 km from the town of Kottayam. Believed to have been built in the 16th century, the giant lamp, situated at the entrance of the main entrance, called the valiyavilakku, is supposed to have been lit since the past 450 years, sustained by donations of oils from the devotees. The temple, apart from inspiring a deep religiosity and devotion also evokes a sense of awe and wonder at the unique craftsmanship and ingenious artistry of the inner walls of the temple.

TAIL TEMPLE

The Tali temple is one of the oldest specimens of religious places of Calicut. It goes back to the days of the Zamorins, and constitutes one of the most important pilgrims for the worshippers of Lord Shiva. This temple observes five different ceremonies being performed every day. However, the most spectacular one that happens here is on the occasion of the Malayalam new year, when a seven-day long celebration commences. These celebrations are usually centered around the religious icons of the temple.

BEYOPORE BEACH

The Beyopore Beach is located about 10 km south of Calicut, at the mouth of the Chaliyar river. Apart from being extremely picturesque with palm fringed lines, the beach also has a historical significance. It served as a port, a harbor and an important center for the Trade and Maritime transactions between Asia and the Chinese and Arab travelers. Later it evolved as an important center for ship building and was in great demand by the merchants from western Asia. The beach of Beyopore had become more and more famous for its boat building industry. Uri, or the famous Arabic vessels, built by the ‘Khalasis’ or the native craftsmen, had become renowned for being intricate works of art.

KRISHNA MENON MUSEUM

Are you an ardent lover of art? Then you are heading to just the right place. Calicut houses a museum dedicated to the famous orator and spokesperson for India at the General Assembly of the UN, V.K. Krishna Menon. Established in 1975, the museum proudly exhibits the memorabilia and several other personal belongings of the great man. The most noteworthy section here is the one on art, where there are several masterpieces of modern art, apart from some intricately carved wood and ivory objects and authentic Kerela murals mesmerize the visitors with their exquisite craftsmanship.

PAZHASSIRAJA MUSEUM

The Pazhassira Museum is another storehouse of rich archeological and historical artifacts of India. Located in the East Hill region of Calicut, the Pazhassira Museum enshrines many ancient paintings and antique bronzes that are of immense value. Several monuments like the dolmonoid cysts, as well as the famous umbrella stones that have a monolithic significance, are also preserved in this Museum.

CALICUT BEACH

Among the various natural settings of Calicut, the Calicut Beach is a premier one. To walk down the lond sandy expanse with the wind playing hide and seek in the hair is an overwhelming experience. The Beach is embellished with two twin piers and a lighthouse that face towards the sea. To watch the sun set over the unrestrained horizon is a charming and rejuvenating sight. If you are lucky enough you might catch a glimpse of the dolphins bounding their way towards the mid sea by the Dolphin point, a few yards into the sea.

KAPPAD BEACH

The Kappad Beach is one of the very few beaches in India, that carries a rich historical significance. This is the place where the famous world explorer, Vasco de Gama had set his foot upon in India. Though this renowned event had occurred several centuries ago in 1498, the beach still captures the old world elegance. One cannot help remembering the historical event that this beach had been the silent witness of. In fact, to honor this significant historical event, there is a stone monument that is erected on the Kappad Beach so that the visitors can get a feel for those times.

ELATHUR

The coastal district of Calicut is further beautified by the presence of numerous small villages that are almost picture perfect in their setting and serenity. Elathur is such a place that abounds in Natural sights and sounds of nature. Bound with a lake on one hand and a river on the other, this tiny village with a small population of 7000 people is mesmerizing and immensely appealing to the lovers of nature.

VELLARI MALA

The city of Calicut owes its share of renown to the expansive waterscapes, the numerous waterfalls and the enticing trekking routes. Vellari Mala is basically a combination of all the three. Not only is it home to one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Kerela, but also is a Trekker’s paradise in terms of the rocky terrain and the beautiful green meadows. However, it is advisable not to trek in Vellari Mala at night.

KADALUNDI

Kadalundi is basically the name of the village that adjoins the river, on the banks of Kadalundi river which is situated a bird sanctuary. This village is famous for serving the quintessential delicacies of the Indian cuisine. The bird sanctuary is also of immense popularity among the visitors here. Apart from the 100 odd species of birds, the visitors are often mesmerized by the rich variety of flora and fauna found in this region.
